The best school socks in Malaysia are plain white or plain black socks that match your child's school shoes. Since 2021, the Education Ministry rule has been black shoes with black socks, or white shoes with white socks. Pick a cushioned, breathable, hard-wearing pair and buy 5 to 7 pairs per child for a school week. This guide covers the rules, how many pairs to buy, what to look for and what it costs.
What colour school socks are allowed in Malaysia?
Under the Ministry of Education (KPM) directive that took effect for the 2021 school year, students may wear either black or white shoes, and their socks must match their shoes: black shoes with black socks, white shoes with white socks. Before that, the 2018 directive allowed only black.
Individual schools still set their own discipline rules on things like sock length and logos. Check your child's school handbook (buku peraturan sekolah) before you buy in bulk.
How many pairs of school socks does a child need?
A simple way to work it out:
- 5 pairs covers Monday to Friday if you do laundry every weekend.
- 7 pairs is more comfortable. It covers a co-curricular Saturday or sports day, a pair that gets soaked in the rain, and a wash that doesn't dry in time during monsoon season.
- Add 2 more if your child plays a sport after school and changes socks.
If your child wears white shoes, keep one or two spare pairs aside. White socks show wear first and schools notice grey, stained socks.
What makes a good school sock?
- Cushioning under the foot. Kids run, jump and play at recess in the same socks they sit in all day.
- Breathability. Many classrooms rely on fans, not air-conditioning. A breathable knit keeps feet drier and less smelly by the end of the day.
- Durability. School socks get washed every week, all year. Look for socks that keep their shape and colour after many washes.
- A cuff that stays up. Socks that sag around the ankle look untidy and bunch up inside shoes.
- The right size. Socks that are too big bunch up and cause blisters; socks that are too small wear through at the heel. Children's feet grow fast, so check the size every school year.

How do I keep white school socks white?
- Wash white socks separately from dark clothes and turn them inside out.
- Soak very dirty socks in warm water with detergent before washing, rather than scrubbing hard.
- Avoid chlorine bleach on socks with elastane. It weakens the stretch.
- Dry them in the sun. It helps with odour and brightens whites naturally.

FAQ
Can my child wear black socks with white shoes?
No. Under the KPM rule, socks must match the shoes: black with black, white with white.
Are ankle socks allowed at school?
It depends on the school. The ministry rule covers colour. Length and logos are usually set by each school's discipline unit, so check the handbook.
When should I buy school socks?
A few weeks before the new school session, to avoid the rush. Buy one pair first to check fit, then buy the rest.
How often should school socks be replaced?
When the heel or toe thins, the cuff sags or white socks stay grey after washing. For most kids, that means once a year alongside new shoes.
How much are Xocks kids' socks?
RM11.99 per pair on xocks.co, for ages 4 to 12, in 12 colours including white and black.
