For socks you wear every day, a well-made pair at around RM12 to RM15 is usually better value than a RM3 to RM5 pair, because it lasts many more washes and stays comfortable in Malaysian heat. For socks you rarely wear, cheap socks are perfectly fine.
The real question is not the price tag but the cost per wear. Here is an honest breakdown.
What is the actual difference between cheap and premium socks?
Most of the difference is in things you can't see on the shelf:
| Factor | Typical budget socks (about RM3 to RM6) | Typical mid-range or premium socks (about RM12 to RM20) |
|---|---|---|
| Yarn | Thinner yarn, often a single ply. Pills and thins quickly. | Thicker, stronger yarn. Holds its shape longer. |
| Knit density | Looser knit. Can feel see-through after a few washes. | Denser knit. Feels thicker and wears more evenly. |
| Cushioning | Usually flat, with no padded sole. | Often a cushioned footbed under the sole. |
| Cuff elastic | Loosens early, so socks slide down. | Holds grip for longer. |
| Sizing | Often one size with little stretch. | Usually a stated size range. |
These are general patterns, not rules. Some cheap socks are decent and some expensive ones are not. Feel the thickness, stretch the cuff and check the heel before you buy.
How do you calculate cost per wear?
Cost per wear = price per pair ÷ number of times you can wear it before it's worn out.
Here's an illustrative example. The wash counts are assumptions for comparison, not test results:
- A RM4 pair that thins out after about 20 wears costs RM0.20 per wear.
- A RM13.99 pair that lasts 100 wears costs about RM0.14 per wear.
If the better pair lasts at least three to four times as long, it works out cheaper over time. It also feels better on every one of those days. If it doesn't last that long, the cheap pair wins on cost. That's why durability is the number to look for.
When are cheap socks good enough?
Cheap socks make sense when:
- You need a backup pair for travel, a hike in the mud, or a one-off event
- Children are going through sizes quickly
- You only wear closed shoes once in a while
- You need lots of socks for a short-term use, like an event giveaway
When is it worth paying more?
Spending more pays off when:
- You wear closed shoes daily, for office, school runs or an on-your-feet job. Comfort adds up over 8 to 10 hours a day.
- Your feet sweat a lot. In our humid weather, a breathable knit and a cushioned sole make a noticeable difference by the evening.
- You exercise. Running, futsal and badminton punish thin socks fast. Blisters cost more than socks.
- Your socks are seen. Socks show in shoes-off homes, mosques, temples and some offices, and premium socks stay presentable for longer.
What about imported performance brands at RM40 to RM60?
Imported performance socks, mostly sports-specific, can cost RM40 to RM60 or more per pair in Malaysia. They are worth it if you need a specialist feature for long-distance running or hiking. For everyday wear, the jump from RM5 to around RM14 usually gives most of the comfort gain. The jump from RM14 to RM50 gives a smaller extra benefit for most people.
Where does Xocks fit?
We're a Malaysian sock brand, so read this section with that in mind. Xocks sits in the mid-range:
- Plain Series socks (ankle, half, crew and no-show) are RM13.99 per pair. They have a 1.6x extra cushion footbed and a super breathable knit, are rated for 100+ washes, and fit UK 4.5 to 12.5.
- Buying in bulk brings the per-pair price down. The Black & White Bundle starts at RM51.96 for 4 pairs, and 24 pairs cost RM215.76, which is about RM8.99 per pair.
- For running, Performance Running Socks are RM27.90 per pair, below most imported performance brands.
All Xocks socks are designed and made in Malaysia.
FAQ
Are expensive socks really worth it?
For socks you wear every day, usually yes. They last longer, stay cushioned and keep their shape, so the cost per wear is often lower. For occasional use, cheap socks are fine.
Why do cheap socks get holes so fast?
Budget socks often use thinner yarn and a looser knit, so high-friction areas like the heel and toe wear through sooner. Washing them hot and tumble-drying them speeds this up.
How much should I spend on everyday socks in Malaysia?
Around RM10 to RM15 per pair, or less per pair in bundles, buys good quality for daily wear. Spend more only if you need a specialist sports feature.
Are pasar malam socks bad?
Not necessarily. They're great value for backups and short-term use. Just expect them to thin out and lose elastic sooner than better-made pairs.
How can I tell if a sock is good quality before buying?
Check four things. The fabric should feel thick and dense, the cuff should snap back when stretched, the sole should have some cushioning, and the brand should state the size range clearly.
